Interesting Facts of Palaces Symbolizing Indian Splendor


In ancient India, when there were small princely states over which kings ruled.  During his reign, he built palaces that were unmatched specimens of workmanship and architecture.  Many of them became extinct in the trough of time, but some are still today that tells the story of the glory of that time.  Let us tell you some interesting facts about some of those palaces.

01. King Kothi Palace - 


This palace located in Hyderabad is also known as Nazri Bagh Palace. The palace, built by Kamal Khan, was purchased by the Nizam in 1911.  Each window in it had 'KK' inscribed on the doors and arches which the Nizam converted into King Kothi. There are three buildings here and a library.

2. Amba Vilas Palace- 


This palace belongs to Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV of Mysore.  Earlier this palace was made of sandalwood.  Which got damaged over time.  Hence the palace was repaired and converted into a museum and a second palace was built.  

This palace made of gray stones is a wonderful specimen of Dravidian, Eastern and Roman art.  There is a fort with a dome of gold leaf.  Which spreads the golden aura around in the sunlight.  There is a dollhouse that houses a collection of dolls from the 19th and 20th centuries.  There is a marriage pavilion with roofs of colored vials.  There is a 200 kg gold throne here.  It is said to be of the time of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata period.  This throne is kept for the people to see at the time of Dussehra.

3. Lakshmi Vilas Palace - 


The famous Maratha Gaekwad family is the Lakshmi Vilas Palace located in Vadodara, Gujarat.  Built in 1890 at a cost of 180000, this palace was built by Maharaj Sayajirao.  It is four times larger than Buckingham Palace.  It is equipped with modern facilities.

4. Umaid Bhawan Palace - 


Umaid Bhawan Palace, also known as Chittar Mahal, located in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan.  It was built in 1929 during the time of Maharaja Umaid Singh.  It is also known as Chittar Mahal because of the Chittar hill made of stones.  It took 16 years to build.  It is made of sandstone and marble.  

It has been used as a blend of Arabic classical revival and Western art styles in its making.  At present, it has been divided into three parts.  One part of it is used as a hotel, another as a museum and the third as a residence of the royal family.

05. Ramnagar Fort- 


Ramnagar Fort in Ramnagar is situated at Tulsighat on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi.  It was built in 1750 by Kashi Naresh Balwant Singh.  It is formed from the sandstone of Chunar.  Its old form is being destroyed by the effect of time.  This fort was the residence of the King of Kashi.  There is also a museum here.

6. Jai Vilas Palace- 


It was built in 1874 by Jayaliraj Scindia, the ruler of Gwalior.  It is spread over 1,240,771 square feet.  This palace is 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 41 feet high.  There is also a museum here.  Members of the Maratha Scindia family still live here.
